(HealthNewsDigest.com) – It’s “Just a Taste” of food, that is! But when is just a taste more than a taste? Well, for starters, when it’s the holiday season and we’re having just a taste of this, just a taste of that; well, we get my point. And doesn’t it all add up without us realizing it? In my opinion, when we don’t put our food on a plate, or write our just a taste down on our food record, our brain just doesn’t register it. Or maybe we’re in denial (research does back my opinion up!)? Whatever the case, I’ve been guilty of this year- round myself when I shop at my favorite market, and I even shop at the very times that they put out all the taste samples. Of course, eventually when the scale starts to creep up, and I haven’t changed my meals (creative meals, of course) I stop and add it all up. Okay, here’s a sampling of some common holiday “it’s just a taste” treats.
Chocolate Kiss Grab a couple chocolates while passing the Christmas office basket? Just an ounce of plain chocolate averages 150 calories.
Gingerbread homemade cookie Enjoy an afternoon cookie gingerbread or otherwise, with a pick- me up coffee? The average brand cookie weighing in at 1.5 ounces is about 150 calories.
Peanut brittle Well 150 calories seems to be the number, with the average 1 ounce bar equaling our cookie and chocolate.
Chips and dip Eat just a few while waiting for that dinner table? Well munch on this, just 5 tortilla chips and 1 tablespoon of cheese dip equals about 100 calories. Make it a bean dip and it becomes 130 calories.
Mixed nuts Forget the handful folks, grab a meager tablespoon at the bar and we’ve got about 60 calories for the average oil roasted mixed nut just a taste.
Crackers & cheese Having just a few at the holiday cocktail party as an appetizer? Just 3 crackers with a 1 ounce tiny taste of the average cheese can cost us about 150 calories.
Dried fruit Think that dried fruit is a good afternoon snack? Take all the water out of our fruit and we’ve got about 70 calories for an ounce.
Pecan pie What would a list of tastes be without our “just a sliver” of dessert? Oh my, the average commercially prepared pie averages 450 calories for 1/6th of a 8 inch pie. So, even if we halve it, we’ve still tasted 225 calories!
Now, as we can see, not all calories come in big servings or meals; many come in small tastes, but they add up over the course of a day, week, and holiday season (just like our liquid fat, alcohol). Enjoy 1/2 an afternoon cookie, an ounce of chocolate, and a couple of crackers with just one small piece of cheese, and we’ve got a couple of hundred calories of “just a taste”, which doesn’t include our dinner, dessert, or that glass or two of champagne (all calories are approximate and vary by brand).
Of course, I’m not suggesting that we stop enjoying ourselves, food is part of our making merry. Let’s just remember that with every taste comes extra calories that we sometime forget.
