(HealthNewsDigest.com) – There is a fascinating love-hate relationship that society seems to have with the concept of plastic surgery. In the court of public opinion, we perceive cosmetic surgery as a vain measure, taken by those who are entirely motivated by superficial needs. But below the surface, the majority of us would like to change at least one physical characteristic about ourselves if given the chance. The numbers will attest to that: 10 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States in 2009 alone (Source: American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery). So, why the need to keep our desire to undergo cosmetic procedures closeted and yet go under the knife?

Fabulous Faces: From Motivation to Transformation Through Facial Plastic Surgery, the new book from leading cosmetic surgeon Peter A. Adamson, M.D., of Adamson Associates Cosmetic Facial Surgery Clinic, provides a much different view of plastic surgery and those who decide to go through with it.

“Overall public opinion makes cosmetic surgery look frivolous and unnecessary,” says Dr. Adamson. “There’s more to cosmetic surgery than meets the eye. The decision to undergo these procedures requires a person to seek self-actualization, the goal of which is to have one’s outer appearance reflect their inner spirit.”

Taking readers along the personal journeys of his patients, Fabulous Faces allows those contemplating cosmetic surgery to fully understand the journey that they themselves may embark upon.

“I really felt that it was important that people considering surgical or non-surgical cosmetic procedures make the best and most well-informed decision for themselves,” adds Dr. Adamson. “This requires having a good understanding of the psychological journey that is required and the results that might be achieved, both objectively and psychologically.”

Complete with true patient accounts and a breakdown of various procedures, readers will find in Fabulous Faces:

· Who is having cosmetic surgery and the key motivations behind making the decision

· Examples of how cosmetic surgery has had a positive impact on patients’ lives

· ‘The Courage Factor’ and how one conquers fears about having the surgery

· A navigation through the different specialties of plastic surgery and how to find the right doctor for every kind of procedure

· An exploration of the various stages of the transformative journey that patients take
