(HealthNewsDigest.com) – What do Ashlee Simpson, Blake Lively, Ashley Tinsdale, Diana Argan, Jennifer Grey, Amanda Bynes, Halle Berry, and Courtney Love have in common? All of these celebs are rumored to have gone under the knife to tweak their noses. But nose jobs are not just for famous faces any more.
According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (http://www.aafprs.org), there has been a recent marked increase in people seeking rhinoplasties. In fact, this trend is so popular, that they have coined a new term to describe it; rhino-popularity.
They created an infographic that elaborates on the aspects of this trend; The 2013 Rhino-Popularity Report, http://www.aafprs.org/for-patients. “Our primary goal is to shed new light on the facts of rhinoplasty for consumers, and help guide them through the process of considering a nasal procedure,” suggested Robert Kellman, M.D., F.A.C.S., AAFPRS President.
“Rhinoplasty is a much more complex operation than many people realize. It is not just as simple as taking away a bump or making the nostrils smaller. We have all seen cases of people who had their noses done that didn’t turn out so well. AAFPRS members are specially trained to respect the natural anatomy of the nose,” he said.
Around half a million Americans go for consultations about their nose every year. But why is rhinoplasty in such demand right now?
“Improving the shape of the nose is perhaps the single most impactful facial plastic surgery that we do. It is the central feature of the face, and changing the nose even by only a few millimeters can make a significant difference in your overall appearance,” said facial plastic surgeon Edwin F. Williams, III, M.D., FACS, in Latham, New York.
Rhinoplasty is not just popular among women. It is the most common cosmetic surgery requested by men. There are, however, some differences in what women and men want. Guys are more often looking for a hump reduction for a large nose, or a better profile. They also want to have a strong, square jawline that may necessitate the addition of a chin implant or fat grafting. What women want is slightly different, according to Sam Rizk, M.D., F.A.C.S., a facial plastic surgeon in New York City; “Women are most interested in a more subtle nasal refinement with a nicely proportioned tip. They also tend to be concerned with achieving a graceful, contoured and youthful neck.”
The rhino-popularity trend also skews across all age groups. Teens as young as 14 desire an improvement in the way their noses look, and are asking their parents for nose jobs as graduation presents.
Some important facts to consider about rhinoplasty surgery; the op takes one to three hours. It can be done under twilight anesthesia where you are in a sleepy state, or general anesthesia. There may be a dressing or splint applied for five to ten days, and if sutures are needed, they will be removed in five to eight days. You may have swelling or bruising for up to two weeks, which is the usual recovery time or when you can go back to school or work.
Lastly, what does a rhinoplasty procedure cost? The fee depends on what exactly is being done to your nose, and how complex the surgery will be. An average fee in New York or L.A. may run from $10,000 -15,000, with fees being lower in some other parts of the country. If your nose has been operated on before and you need a revision rhinoplasty, the cost may be considerably higher.
