(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Every plastic surgeon wants to create a nose that amazes his or her patient. Despite the best of intentions, however, the quality of the cartilage, thickness of the skin, and healing process all affect the final results. For that reason, doctors often provide patients with a set of instructions to help with the healing process. Following these instructions to the letter can help to ensure optimal results.

Dr. Nassif sees many patients for revision rhinoplasty in Beverly Hills who have experienced complications during the healing after their primary rhinoplasty which negatively affected their results. While he can often achieve dramatic improvement in the appearance and function of the nose with revision rhinoplasty, it’s always best to get it right the first time whenever possible. Following the tips below can help you to do just that.

Stop Smoking

You’ve probably heard the dangers of smoking dozens of times. Your habit puts you at risk for cancer and heart disease. Smoking also affects the body’s ability to heal and increases the risk for complications during and after surgery. Smoking causes blood vessels to constrict, reducing oxygen flow to areas that are healing. Many doctors will not perform surgery on patients who ignore advice and continue smoking prior to a rhinoplasty.

The Center for Surgery at Birmingham Veterans Affairs Hospital performed a study on healing in smokers. They studied more than 393,000 patients, both smokers and non-smokers, and found that the risks for smokers were higher. Smokers had higher incidences of infections at the incisions and postoperative pneumonia.

Consult with Your Surgeon About Medications and Supplements

There are medications and supplements that increase blood flow or interfere with anesthesia. Heed your plastic surgeon’s advice on avoidance of these medications before and after your rhinoplasty surgery. These items include pain relievers like aspirin or ibuprofen, vitamin E, and some herbal supplements like garlic, gingko, ginseng, and St. John’s Wort.

Understanding When to Call Your Plastic Surgeon

Following rhinoplasty surgery, swelling and bruising are normal. You may also experience some pain, discomfort and numbness. You will see your plastic surgeon in a few days to have the sutures and splint or cast removed. At that point, the doctor checks to make sure you’re healing properly.

It is essential to seek medical attention if your heart rhythm changes, you have chest pains, or you can’t seem to catch your breath. While rare, it could be a sign of a blood clot in the venous system.
