Downsides to the ‘No-Knife Nose Job’

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Every once in a while, another news story surfaces singing the praises of the “No-Knife Nose Job” (non-surgical rhinoplasty) as the Daily Mail did recently. Though much newer than surgical rhinoplasty, non-surgical rhinoplasty is not as innovative as one might guess from the information in the article. Non-surgical rhinoplasty, which is performed by injecting a dermal filler into the nose in order to shape it, has been used safely for at least a decade. Though the fillers are only able to add volume to the nose, the result can sometimes make the nose look smaller by straightening and streamlining the patient’s nose. While this sounds like an ideal solution for patients seeking quick and easy refinement to the nose, there are some downsides that need to be considered before making the decision to undergo a non-surgical rhinoplasty. Always do your research and consult with rhinoplasty experts before deciding on fillers or surgery.

Permanence

The main drawback to non-surgical rhinoplasty is that the procedure is not permanent. As with dermal fillers used to fill in wrinkles, the results of nasal injections last only a few months to a year or so. In order to maintain results, the treatment must be repeated at these intervals. The hassle and expense of maintenance is a major drawback to many prospective patients.

Cost

While it may seem cheaper to undergo a quick injection with a lower initial cost, the maintenance required can boost the cost of a non-surgical rhinoplasty past that of a traditional rhinoplasty in just a few years. Since surgical rhinoplasty is permanent, there should be no ongoing cost, unless the patient decides to have a revision surgery or later touch-up performed.

Degree of Refinement

While non-surgical rhinoplasty can certainly produce admirable improvement in the appearance of the nose, there are many changes that cannot be made with fillers alone. Fillers can only provide augmentation, and are good for subtle change, but nothing more extensive. The following are some changes that require surgery:

  • Reducing the size of the nose
  • Alleviating breathing problems (such as those caused by a deviated septum)
  • Reshaping the nostrils
  • Narrowing the nose

Unskilled Application

If you do decide to pursue non-surgical rhinoplasty, it’s important to seek out a respected rhinoplasty expert to perform the procedure. Because the treatment is performed with an injection instead of a scalpel, many people feel qualified to perform the procedure who do not have the finesse and knowledge to properly administer the filler. Though not as complex as surgery, non-surgical rhinoplasty requires a skilled hand and artistic touch. Unskilled application can result in an undesirable outcome or cause other, more serious problems.

Future Rhinoplasty Plans

If you are considering trying out nasal refinement by using fillers and seeking surgical correction later on, you should discuss this with your surgeon. Some fillers can make surgery more difficult in the future, and if you’re using the non-surgical option as a test, you should get advice on which filler is least likely to cause problems later on.

Reversible Options

While no permanent non-surgical options are available, some fillers are reversible, in case the patient is not pleased with the outcome. For those who have never tried non-surgical rhinoplasty, it’s better to start with hyaluronic fillers, such as Restylane, Juvederm, or Perlane. Radiesse, though the longest lasting, cannot be reversed in this manner. Radiesse is popular for patients who have had fillers injected previously and do not intend to have surgery later on.

Moving Forward

Whether you decide to move forward with a surgical or non-surgical rhinoplasty, you should always consult with a number of board-certified rhinoplasty experts before you make your decision. One of the most important steps you can take is to choose a knowledgeable, experienced surgeon you trust to perform your procedure.
