(HealthNewsDigest.com) – CHICAGO, June 2, 2014 — The month of June has been designated Migraine and Headache Awareness Month. The theme for June, 2014, is based on the vision statement of the National Headache Foundation “A World Without Headache.” The global burden of headache is extremely large, putting headache among the top 10 causes of disability worldwide. It is estimated that 1,000,000,000 people in the world suffer from migraines.
Over 36 million Americans experience migraine headaches – that is 12 percent of the population. And headaches cause an estimated 88.4 hours of missed school and work. The annual cost of migraine – including hospital admissions, visits to the physician and emergency room, and prescription medications – totals $7,089 per patient.
This is why the National Headache Foundation is standing up to “show purple, show support” during awareness month. We challenge everyone else to stand up with us and let others know they are not alone. Together, we can work through education, research, and advocacy to create “A World Without Headache.”
