(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Fillers have been used for decades to help fill in facial wrinkles. In the past, bovine collagen was commonly used, although it was very temporary and required a skin allergy test. Today, hyaluronic acid fillers have become the norm. Injectable fillers are now one of the most popular anti-aging treatments, and they help counteract signs of facial aging like wrinkles, which are caused by underlying tissue breaking down due to age, gravity, diet, genetics, sun damage and facial movement.

Hyaluronic acid is an excellent choice for a dermal filler because it is highly compatible with our bodies. Hyaluronic acid is actually found in every living thing, and it works as a network to transfer nutrients from our bloodstream to our skin cells. It is actually a complex sugar molecule that creates a large matrix in connective tissue. Humans have high concentrations of HA in soft connective tissues, as well as skin tissue. Hyaluronic acid fillers are not made from animal sources but produced in a lab.

When injected, hyaluronic acid gel works like a cushion to plump facial tissue that has lost elasticity and volume due to age. It also helps bring water to the surface to keep the skin looking supple. HA acts like a sponge to bind and absorb water and create facial volume. Hyaluronic acid fillers are usually used to treat facial folds and wrinkles, as well as plumping up areas that have lost volume, such as under the eyes, the cheeks and the lips.

There are actually several types of HA fillers available today. The most well-known hyaluronic acid dermal fillers include Perlane, Juvederm, and Restylane. Each type of filler works a bit differently, with results that can last anywhere from 6 months to two years. Some fillers have larger molecules, which make them more ideal for filling deeper wrinkles and folds, but not for areas like the lips, where they would form visible lumps. Other HA fillers are made with very small molecules that make them ideal for filling fine lines or plumping areas with thin skin, like the lips and under the eyes.

While they offer many advantages, dermal fillers are not for everyone. If you are considering fillers, schedule a consultation with a professional to determine if you are a good candidate and learn more about which hyaluronic acid filler would offer the best results.
