(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Revision Rhinoplasty is a procedure that often takes place when a previous attempt of rhinoplasty has not been up to par with the expectations of the patient. This can be a minor aesthetical flaw or something as major as functionally damaged nostrils. The most common reason for a rhinoplasty to fall short of the expectations of a patient is the experience of the surgeon performing that particular procedure.

A Notable Doctor in this Field

Some plastic surgeons might specialize in other procedures but might not perform enough rhinoplasty operations to gain adequate expertise in it to be proficient. In this regard Dr. Bustillo’s experience makes him the ideal surgeon to visit if a patient is unhappy with their previous venture under the knife. His expertise numbers into the hundreds of nasal operations a year including reconstructive surgeries.

What is Revision Rhinoplasty and who qualifies for it?

This procedure is essentially the corrective surgery for a previous surgery that resulted in a discontent patient. Procedures involving revision rhinoplasty fall into two main categories. The first refers to small variations required to the original rhinoplasty or ‘nose job’. The patient is generally content with the outcome of their previous surgery, however, they still believe there to be room for slight improvements or corrections.

The second category is the botched rhinoplasty revision. In this category, the patient suffered major dissatisfaction over their result from the first operation. This might be a significant deformity in appearance or restrictive functional capabilities, or even a combination of both.

The doctor has to gauge the damage caused by the first surgery and plot a map to correction of the problem. This is discussed and finalized in a consultation session with the patient. To accomplish this is not usually easy as the patient has lost confidence of going under the knife. Most people contemplate cosmetic surgery for years before committing to it, and if they’re let down, it could not only deplete their faith in the notion of cosmetic surgery but they also take a blow to their self-esteem and confidence.

The procedure and post-operation

Following the consultation with the surgeon and observing computer simulations of the expected outcome, the patient is put under general anesthetic and a small incision is made to access the cartilage underneath. Dr. Bustillo insists the ‘outside’ incision in the columella is the best approach instead of the ‘inside’ incision which is made in the nostril.

The cartilage is rebuilt and reshaped before closing the skin graft with sutures. Additional supports might be added for added structural integrity. This will result in the final shape formation and ensure the proper function of the nostrils as well. Any scars that were left over from the previous rhinoplasty are taken into consideration for the healing process. Scars are tough tissues and don’t flex as easily as normal skin, therefore, the behavior of the skin during the healing process must be accurately predicted. A nonsymmetrical pull of the healing skin would result in a lop-sided nose apex.

The healing process takes about a year for the inflammation to finally go down. Most patients insist that their revision rhinoplasty be conducted after a few months of their initial rhinoplasty. This is understandable as it is a source of distress and dismay for them. However, for the best results, patience is a prerequisite.
