The Skinny on Body Contouring After Weight Loss

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Weight loss, as a result of exercise and dieting alone or due to surgery, can be a wonderful and empowering thing. However, many people are under the impression that simply losing weight is all they need to do in order to achieve the aesthetic and health results they desire, and often, this is just not the case.

When the body’s tissues and skin are not elastic enough to fit your reduced body size, it can create sagging areas around the arms, thighs, breasts and stomach. This sagging skin can hide your new, trimmer figure and create the unattractive appearance of extra weight, even when the fat is no longer there. For this reason, plastic surgery aimed at body contouring is more popular than ever, with tummy tucks and thigh lift procedures rising over 70% since 2000, and breast lifts (a top procedure since 2006), rising as well.

Body contouring surgically removes excess skin and fat, while also improving the tone and shape of underlying tissue. Roughly one in five, or about 20% of patients, who undergo weight loss surgery require some kind of body contouring afterwards. Sagging skin can be painful while exercising, and exercise is an important component of maintaining a healthy, toned body. It can also result in body image insecurities, despite any success of the initial weight loss surgery itself.

If you have lost a lot of weight, I recommend that you consult with a board certified plastic surgeon at an accredited facility to see if you might be a good candidate for body contouring. The more informed you are about your health and your body, the more satisfaction you’ll receive from any weight loss or cosmetic surgery. Connect with us today at Marina Plastic Surgery and come in for a consultation. Congratulations on the new you!
