(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Although sexual dysfunction is a very common medical issue facing men and women (31% of men and 43% of women report some degree of difficulty in this area), the topic is still one that many people don’t feel comfortable discussing. As such, many people don’t know what options are available to them, and how easily the problem can be addressed. One such treatment option that many people aren’t aware of, but which is highly effective when employed correctly, is PRP Therapy. The Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, the largest and longest-running private plastic surgery group in the country, specializes in PRP treatments, including those designed to treat sexual dysfunction. Here’s a quick primer on PRP:

What is PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy?

PRP Therapy is a treatment method that harnesses the potential of a patient’s own stem cells to treat a variety of medical and aesthetic conditions. It involves taking blood from the patient, then placing the blood into a centrifuge and separating it into separate phases (the active part being PRP, Platelet-Rich Plasma, which has the highest concentration of peripheral stem cells). The PRP derived from the blood sample is then administered to the patient, typically through an injection of some kind.

What is PRP Therapy Used For?

PRP Therapy has been shown to be effective for a multitude of medical and aesthetic conditions, including use in cosmetic procedures like the popular “Vampire Facial,” hair restoration treatments, correcting pelvic floor issues in women, and sexual dysfunction issues in both men and women.

How Does PRP Therapy Treat Sexual Dysfunction?

PRP procedures exist for both male and female sexual dysfunction. PRP Therapy takes Platelet-Rich Plasma from the patient and combines it with a special compound that is then injected into the treatment area. Women receive what is called the O Shot, which helps increase sensitivity and lubrication.

Male sexual dysfunction is a vascular problem, which is why Viagra and other medications can help. In terms of PRP treatments, Men receive what is called a P Shot, which helps address decreased sensitivity and difficulties with erection and climaxing. It is a combination of Platelet-Rich Plasma taken from the patient as well as a special compound that is added to the sample. The P Shot is injected locally, and helps increase the vascularity (or blood flow) to the area where it is injected.

A P Shot treatment is actually five injections which are done under topical anesthesia, so it is not a painful treatment. Most patients see results (improvements in sensitivity, erection, climax, and even penis size) after just one treatment, although the effects are additive and additional benefits are derived from subsequent sessions. Typically we recommend 2-3 sessions for maximal benefit. In addition to the P Shot, patients are directed to take a low-dose Cialis for 30 days after the shot, and to use a penile pump once daily (this acts as an external tissue expander and helps promote new vascular channel formation).

Does PRP Work for Everyone, and How Long Does it Last?

At LIPSG, we have never seen this procedure not work on a patient – patients are typically extremely happy with their results after just one session. Although the effects are long-lasting, they are not permanent, so after the initial 2-3 recommended treatments, maintenance is done on an as-needed basis.
